Correlation Between Library Instruction and Student Retention: Methods and Implications

Eight years of data from Grand Valley State University Libraries show a positive correlation between in-class library instruction and student reenrollment the following fall semester. Using consistent statistical methods over time, controlling for confounding factors, using large population (N>16,000 annually) strict protocols that restrict employees having access to individual data, researchers have developed replicable, secure process exploring relationship engagement success prioritizes security subject anonymity alongside scalability. Results informed modifications Libraries’ program raised interesting additional questions about impact classroom faculty who actively engage their students with academic library.
